First released in 1972, The Godfather is a crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. A commercial and critical success, it became the year’s highest-grossing film and bagged several Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. The screenplay was sourced from an eponymous novel written by Mario Puzo.
One of the most famous scenes in the first movie is the opening scene where Vito, played by Marlon Brando, can be seen holding a cat. The cat, as it turns out, was a last-minute addition and was not included in the original script. The idea came to Coppola when he found a stray cat walking around at Paramount Studios. He then took the same cat and put it on the scene, although its loud purring required Brando’s lines to be looped over.
